  The most familiar "Titanic Song" .... variously titled "The Titanic" - or - "It Was Sad When That Great Ship Went Down" Husbands and wives, itty-bitty children lost their lives . etc. was probably written by A.P. Carter. The verse about Jack Johnson (The Famous Black, World's Champion Boxer) was written by Hudie Leadbetter.

  We need to clear up some confusion here. The William & Versey Smith "Titanic" ("It was sad when that great ship went down") was recorded in 1927, before the Carters came on the scene, and according to the notes in the Harry Smith Anthology, there's a good chance William Smith wrote it. The A. P. Carter "Titanic" is a different song altogether, one they recorded (according to the NLCR's liner notes) in the 1950s. And the Lead Belly song is still another different song.

• There's also "The Night The Titanic Went Down" by traditional bluegrasser Dean Sapp on his self-produced album (which has the same title as the song)
• In addition to all the "real" Titanic songs, there is a tune by Lonesome Bob on his new "Things Fall Apart," called "Waltzing on the Titanic." It's not really about the Titanic, but it is awfully nice.

  [Available in gospel][I absolutely love this style of unaccompanied sacred music. Point me to a church where I can sing this stuff. The only other sacred music I've ever heard that was this powerful was Sacred Harp music.]
• Bruce Molsky & Big Hoedown - Big Hoedown - Rounder
  [Bruce is one of my favorite oldtime fiddlers and his cds are always a treat. As with his last one, Lost Boy, he mixes up the fiddle and banjo tunes with some fabulous vocals. His band this time is made up of fellow fiddler and banjoist (banjerist?) Rafe Stefanini and guitarist Beverly Smith. Bruce also can take an old song such as "Train on the Island" and make it sound new...without making it sound *too* new.]
• Stanley Brothers - Earliest Recordings - Revnant [Carter and Ralph Stanley recorded for the Rich-R-Tone label in 1947, '48 and '52. These sessions produced 78 rpm records that were only distributed and sold in a limited area of the country. These 78s soon went out of print. These recordings were reissued in the 60s on an LP but the songs had effects added to them, along with the addition of a bass track overdubbed onto it. Even that record, though, was only distributed to a small area and was soon out of print. Now, for the first time since their original issue these songs (some of the earliest from the Stanley Brothers career) are available to the public in their original form. If you have this cd, along with the two Bear Family sets ("1949-1952" and "1953-1958 & 1959"), I believe you have some of the best bluegrass music ever recorded.]
• Ralph Stanley - My All and All - Rebel [Since the 1960s Ralph has alternated his album releases with bluegrass and gospel outings. This is a gospel one. And a good one it is. I really love this relatively recent version of Ralph's band, the Clinch Mountain Boys, too.]
• Jason Carter - On the Move - Rounder [Jason Carter is the fiddler for Del McCoury. And he is certainly impressive. Jason can whip the tar out of a good fast fiddle tune like "Back Up and Push" and then turn around and write one of his own that sounds really oldtimey (Carter Country). All in all this is one of the best bluegrass fiddle cds I've ever heard.]
• Various Artists - Prison Songs - Rounder [This is a library of congress reissue from Rounder dealing with songs recorded in the field at Parchman Farm in 47 and 48. Don't let the word "Farm" fool you either. Parchman Farm is (was?) a work prison at Mississippi State Penitentiary. These songs are POWERFUL. They are sung a capella, unless you count the axe strikes and hoe swings as instruments...which I do.]
• Various Artists - Railroad Ballads - Rounder [This is part of the Library of Congress series. All of these songs are about the railroad. Although the quality is shabby at times (they are field recordings after all!) the strength and "real-ness" of the singers reverberates in your soul.]
• Ed Haley - Forked Deer - Rounder [A double cd release from this extremely influential fiddler from the East KY, Western EV area. He's long gone, but these recordings are still with us. One of my favorite things about this release is that it is listed as "Vol 1." That can only mean more is on its way!]
